GuineaMates was started after I stared into the abyss.
No, not an abyss of demented demons and spirits, jealous hamster owners – or even a global pandemic.
But an abyss of misinformation.
And moreover… the abyss of staring directly into the dark heart of a bag of paper guinea pig bedding pellets.
You see, as brand new guinea pig owners looking for the comfiest, coziest bedding for our precious little guinea babies , we did what most folks probably do – a quick Google search.
The results seemed fair enough, a seemingly legitimate source of information told us that “paper bedding pellets” were one of the recommended options. They seemed cleanly, sensible and (even better) eco-friendly. What more could we ask for…
Turns out, the truth was just the opposite. These horrible, smelly, dusty “pellets” did nothing but hurt our poor piggies’ feet! It was as if they were walking on a constantly shifting, quicksand-like desert made of hellish, dusty grey, cement encrusted stones. The guineas disliked this nasty grey pebble beach so much, they literally didn’t want to come out of their little cardboard houses!
And so it struck me that – like any profit driven industry – most of the pet products I saw for guinea pigs were frankly horrific, borderline abusive, cheap (and nasty) and 100% certified bullshit.
As dog owners and lovers, we were more than familiar with the horrors of what is commonly passed off as pet food.
I also started to notice that the more I searched for better information, the more I came across guinea pig blogs that looked like they were written by somebody hired by the hour living in Bangalore, who’d never even seen a piggie, let alone owned one. These sites all seemed to contradict each other – and were littered with horrible spammy ads everywhere I looked.
And so we decided to start this blog, GuineaMates, dedicated to documenting our journey into guinea pig ownership and revealing – with honesty, transparency and completely free of commercial bias – the truth about what is truly in the best interests of your family piggies.
After all, they’re not just our pets – they’re our mates!
